Cell phone college class opens in Japan
TOKYO - Japanese already use cell phones to shop, read novels, exchange e-mail, search for restaurants and take video clips. Now, they can take a university course.
Cyber University, the nation's only university to offer all classes only on the Internet, began offering a class on mobile phones Wednesday on the mysteries of the pyramids.
For classes for personal computers, the lecture downloads play on the monitor as text and images in the middle, and a smaller video of the lecturer shows in the corner, complete with sound.
The cell phone version, which pops up as streaming video on the handset's tiny screen, plays just the Power Point images.
In a demonstration Wednesday at a Tokyo hotel, an image of the pyramids popped up on the screen and changed to a text image as a professor's voice played from the handset speakers.
Cyber University, which opened in April with government approval to give bachelor's degrees, has 1,850 students.
The virtual campus is 71 percent owned by Softbank Corp., a major Japanese mobile carrier, which also has broadband operations and offers online gaming, shopping and electronic stock trading services.
The cell phone lectures may be expanded to other courses but for now will be for the pyramids course, according to Cyber University, which offers about 100 courses, including ancient Chinese culture, online journalism and English literature.
Unlike the other classes, the one on cell phones will be available to the public for free, although viewers must pay phone fees.
The catch is the lectures can only be seen on some Softbank phones. The service may be expanded to other carriers, officials said.
Sakuji Yoshimura, who heads Cyber University and gives the pyramids course, said the university provides educational opportunities for people who find it hard to attend real-life universities, including those with jobs and those who are sick or have disabilities.
"Our duty as educators is to respond to the needs of people who want to learn," Yoshimura said.
He scoffed at those who question the value of Internet and cell-phone classes, noting attendance is relatively high at 86 percent. Whether students play the lecture downloads to the end can be monitored by the university digitally, officials said.
Although real-time exchange with professors and other students isn't possible in Net classes, social networking and other cyber-discussions are flourishing, said Hiroshi Kawahara, professor in the Faculty of Information Technology and Business.

TAG Heuer to launch mobile phone
PARIS (Reuters) - Swiss watchmaker TAG Heuer, part of French luxury goods group LVMH (LVMH.PA), said on Monday it had licensed its name to French customized design manufacturer Modelabs (MDLB.PA) for a series of luxury mobile phones.
"The launch of the first TAG Heuer mobile telephone is foreseen for the second half of 2008," the companies said in a joint statement.
Luxury goods companies, which realized long ago their brands could be extended to more than clothes and bags, have been rushing to embrace the mobile this year.
Prada and Armani have both recently launched phones made by, respectively, LG Electronics (066570.KS) and Samsung Electronics (005930.KS).
TAG CEO Christophe Babin said in the statement the launch of its eyewear line in 2002 convinced it of the wider potential of the brand, popularized in its adverts by Formula 1 drivers like Kimi Raikkonen, actor Brad Pitt and golfer Tiger Woods.
"The success of this line, already market leader in luxury eyewear, confirmed for us the potential of TAG Heuer as a brand for contemporary, technological and timeless products...such as luxury mobile phones," he said.

Samsung Electronics brings out a cdma2000 1x EV-DO Rev.A phone (SPH-W3150) through LG Telecom. Rev.A is a derivative of CDMA technology, supporting video call and high-speed data communications at maximum 3.1 Mbps speed.

Handango Releases 2007 Third Quarter Yardstick Data Revealing Smartphone Content Industry Trends
The BlackBerry(R) 8830, a newly launched device with GPS capability, led all devices adding software; more new content titles and fewer new content partners were added to the Handango database
HURST, Texas, Nov. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Handango(TM), the world's leading provider of smartphone content, today released the 2007 Third Quarter edition of the Handango Yardstick, a quarterly report on the state of the mobile content industry.
Recently launched smartphone models consistently appear in the list of top devices adding software. The BlackBerry 8830 jumped to the number one position as the device driving the most software revenue and units sold, pushing ahead of the top two leading devices from the last two quarters -- the BlackBerry Pearl and the Motorola(R) Q. The BlackBerry 8830, along with other newly launched devices such as the BlackBerry Curve and the Nokia N95, includes GPS hardware. This trend indicates that device manufacturers and customers are increasingly interested in integrating GPS functionality and smartphones. This quarter, "GPS" continued its trend of appearing in the list of top 10 search words on the Handango retail site.
The number of new content titles added to the Handango library grew from 2,159 added in third quarter of 2006 to 3,261 added in the same period of this year. On the other hand, the number of new content partners declined from 236 in Q3 2006 to 149 in Q3 2007. Therefore, fewer content developers are contributing a larger proportion of the applications in the Handango library.
New versions and upgrades to existing applications continue to appear as best sellers across all platforms. Two examples of new product versions are WorldMate(TM) Live Gold Membership and IM+ for Skype(TM). WorldMate Live Gold Membership is a free version of the perennial best seller which offers additional functionality at the Gold membership level. IM+ for Skype offers the benefits of the original product to Skype users. Best-selling upgrades were published in Q3 for Quickoffice Premier, MemMaid and SOTI Pocket Controller.
Spb Software House continued to stand out in the Pocket PC best sellers list with five best-selling phone-optimizing applications this quarter including: Spb Mobile Shell, Spb Pocket Plus, Spb Phone Suite, Spb Time and Spb Backup.

The Levi's phone is offered in metallic silver, black and brown copper. Stylish feminine "shiny silver" and "shiny sand" editions, featuring a 'mirror' screen have also been created for the fashion forward.
