Nokia welcomes Motorola back to Symbian camp

OULU, Finland (Reuters) - Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research) welcomed on Tuesday Motorola's (MOT.N: Quote, Profile, Research) decision to return to the Symbian phone operating software venture by buying half of rival handset maker Sony Ericsson's (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) (ERICb.ST: Quote, Profile, Research) UIQ venture last week.

Nokia's smartphone software S60 and UIQ are both built on top of software from Symbian, in which Nokia owns a 48 percent stake after Motorola stepped out in 2003.

"We welcome them back to Symbian. This strengthens our view of Symbian's success," Matti Vanska, head of sales and marketing at Nokia's technology platforms unit, told Reuters on sidelines of a technology event in northern Finland.

Nokia's S60 - which it licenses also to Korean rivals Samsung Electronics (005930.KS: Quote, Profile, Research) and LG Electronics (066570.KS: Quote, Profile, Research) -- is the market leader among software platforms with 53 percent market share. Also Microsoft's (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) Windows Mobile and Linux are large players in the market.

Motorola has lately been betting on Linux software, but it has also used UIQ and Windows Mobile software in its phones.
