Apple iPhone announcement rumours

Speculation that details of Apple's European iPhone deals will emerge this week has reached fever pitch.

One major retailer said O2 had 'taken the deal on the table from Apple' rather than battling with the manufacturer over their strict terms. 'It is the world's worst kept secret that the have the deal but it is a question of whether they take it out to the wider channels.'

Carphone Warehouse has already been working with Apple to launch an 'iPod store' in one of its Oxford Street stores.

There is speculation that the launch will take place this month at the O2 venue. The announcement must be imminent if the handset is to be launched this side of Christmas.

The IFA event in Berlin is being hailed as the venue for details of network deals, but reports also suggest that new iPods will be the key products unveiled by the company.

There is a press event scheduled for Wednesday, with invitations carrying the strapline 'The Beat Goes On' with a dancing iPod figure.
Apple is expected to announce new iPod models and The Beatles' music catalogue on iTunes.

Apple did not respond to calls for comment.
