Telefnica O2 and Huawei Expanding 3G Network Coverage

[Prague, Czech, 28 October 2008] Telefnica O2 Czech Republic has taken a significant step towards carrying out its announced expansion of 3G network coverage, based on UMTS/HSDPA technology. By doing so, the operator is continuing in its strategy of expanding high-speed mobile data services in the Czech Republic an area in which it is the leader. Following a tender, Telefnica O2 has chosen Huawei as the provider of the UMTS network infrastructure and modernization of its 2G network and signed up the contract at the end of September.

"Telefnica O2 Czech Republic has always been the leader in high speed data services," says Salvador Anglada, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Telefnica O2 Czech Republic, adding "Now we want to provide the benefits of high speed mobile internet to the most Czech cities. Therefore, we decided to expand our 3G network and modernize our 2G network. To accomplish these tasks, we selected Huawei, one of the most prominent suppliers of mobile network products. We selected them for their experience and quality, as well as for the technical maturity of the technologies they provide."

"We truly appreciate the opportunity to begin cooperating with Telefnica O2 on expanding their network coverage. We are pleased that our offer was successful and that we can thus contribute to essential developments in mobile data technologies," said Xiaoming Tang, President of Telefnica Key Account Department, Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd.

Telefnica O2 is currently the only Czech operator providing 3G network coverage based on UMTS/HSDPA technology in Prague and Brno. Users in these cities can enjoy higher transmissions of up to 3.6 Mbit/s at the beginning of next year. By the end of 2009, the operator is planning to expand the signal to 20 to 30 towns in the Czech Republic. Over the next two to three years, coverage will expand to around 70% of the Czech population.

By the end of 2010, considerable modernization of the 2G network will be carried out in cooperation with Huawei. Through EDGE technology, this network will increase speeds in the entire GSM network to 150-200kbit/s.

In 2004, Telefnica O2 Czech Republic became the first operator in the Czech Republic to introduce high-speed mobile data services based on CDMA 450 technology, the first to launch internationally compatible high-speed mobile data services based on UMTS technology, and was one of the first ten global operators to start offering HSDPA technology commercially.

In the first phase, technology for third-generation mobile networks enable data transfer speeds of up to 3.6 Mbit/s. Within the next few years, it will be possible to increase transfer speeds to up to 7.2 Mbit/s. With UMTS/HSDPA technology, users will thus be able to connect to the Internet and browse web pages, send and receive emails, and stream much faster than they can in other networks.

New Kodak Material Boosts OLED Performance and Energy Efficiency

Green Dopant Material Enables Low-Power, Full-Color, Long-Life OLED Displays

ROCHESTER, N.Y., -- Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE:EK), a pioneer in organic light emitting diode technology (OLED), announced the introduction of a highly efficient OLED material that will enable low-power, full-color displays with outstanding lifetimes. The new material, trademarked KODAK OLED Material EK-GD403, utilizes green dopant technology to deliver a new level of OLED display performance and reliability.

Green dopants are materials that control color output and boost efficiency.

The benefits of OLED technology are well-known and Kodak is working to extend those benefits and accelerate OLED adoption for numerous applications, said Dr. James Buntaine, Chief Technical Officer and Vice President, Kodak OLED Systems. In addition to display screens, Kodaks new green dopant can be used to boost the efficiency of solid-state lighting applications and reinforces Kodaks environmental stewardship by enabling future devices with lower power consumption and longer lives.

According to market research firm DisplaySearch, an NPD Group company, the worldwide OLED flat panel display industry is expected to grow to more than $17 billion annually by 2015. In addition, NanoMarkets predicts that the OLED solid-state lighting industry will grow to more than $5 billion in revenue by 2015.

Kodak has continued to make greater than 50 percent year-over-year improvements in OLED luminance efficiencies over the past few years, and we will continue to fill the pipeline with new innovation to ensure that Kodak OLED materials are ready for use in emerging large-market applications, said Corey Hewitt, Operations Manager and Vice President, Kodak OLED Systems.

Earlier this year Frost & Sullivan recognized Kodaks position as an OLED pioneer by presenting the company with its 2008 Technology Leadership Award.

KODAK OLED Material EK-GD403, used in combination with Kodak OLED Material EK-BH109, provides low-voltage green OLEDs with luminous efficiencies greater than 31 cd/A and lifetimes in excess of 65,000 hours (from an initial luminance of 1,000 cd/m2) and results in an external quantum efficiency of 8.7%.

About Kodak OLED Technology
Organic light emittingdiode displays offer a bright, full-motion display that is viewable from a very wide angle. The displays contain special organic thin-film materials that emit light when stimulated by an electrical charge. Recent advances now enable OLED displays to emit light across the full spectrum of common NTSC or sRGB digital standards. Benefits over conventional display technologies include higher contrast, fast response time that can deliver blur-free video motion, industry-leading (180-degree) viewing angle, thinner design for better ergonomics, and potentially lower manufacturing costs.

Pioneered by Kodak in the late 1970s, OLED technology and its practical applications have generated more than 1,900 issued and pending Kodak patents worldwide. Kodak OLED materials are available for sale to licensees of Eastman Kodak Companys OLED technology. For more information, please visit: www.kodak.com/go/displays.

Ballmer: Zune software coming to Windows Mobile

Zune + Windows Mobile rumors were being whispered around quite forcefully earlier this year, and now we know why. In February, Mel Sampat asked the following question on the Windows Mobile Team Blog: "What are some ways the Zune player and a Windows Mobile device can work better together?" In April, blogger Chris Lanier reported that we would be hearing details of a "Zune integrated with a phone later this year." Apparently, it's late enough in 2008. In an interview with CIO, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said that the Zune software will be coming to Windows Mobile.

"At the end of the day, one of the big trends is that all content is going digital. And if we don't have the software and services that are useful, helpful and valuable for the consumption of music and video, we are sort of not really a player," Ballmer told CIO. "Now, we built the Zune hardware with the Zune softwareand what you'll see more and more over time is that the Zune software will also be ported to and be more important not just with the hardware but on the PC, on Windows Mobile devices, etc."

So Ballmer has finally confirmed what some have speculated: there won't just be a Zune Phone, there will be many Zune Phones. Windows Mobile may not be the biggest platform when it comes to mobile phones, but it does have a presence on every major handset maker, except for Nokia and Apple, and is a major player in the smartphone market. If Microsoft can get Zune-like functionality integrated into Windows Mobile in time for when version 7 ships on various new phones, the Zune ecosystem could get a big boost.

Even as the first iPhone rumors came to light, many were speculating that a Zune Phone was in the works. Microsoft employees insisted, however, that no such thing was being developed (Bill Gates himself denied the rumors in January). Some analysts thought differently; after all, Microsoft wouldn't be the first company to deny rumors that later ended up being true. Integrating the Zune software into a matureand homegrownplatform like Windows Mobile is a better choice than trying to build new hardware and software from scratch. Microsoft is a software company at heart, and it's very good at creating a platform and growing it until the competition realizes their customers expect it on their products.

The Zune is still a young brand, and at the rate it is currently going, it would take years for it to seriously cut into Apple's market share. The mobile phone market is also already very saturated. And yet, even though the Zune has often been hailed as a solid product (especially the 3G), most consumers simply don't think about it as a real alternative to the iPod. If Microsoft can strengthen the Zune brand by taking advantage of the position of Windows Mobile and its mobile hardware ecosystem, the company would have a stronger competitor to the iPod + iTunes juggernaut. It won't be as good a result as selling more Zunes, as Microsoft arguably makes more from selling Zunes than Windows Mobile licenses, but it's better than the alternativebeing locked out of the smartphone + media player market that is becoming much more popular. Microsoft will still need to execute: Windows Mobile 7 has to be a great leap forward from version 6.1, and the company has to be willing to expand the Zune's footprint beyond just the US and Canada.
