Ericsson technology enables new safety device launched by NTT DoCoMo
Ericsson (NASDAQ:ERIC) has announced that a brand-new security device with positioning capabilities, enabled by Ericsson technology, has been launched in Japan.
NTT DoCoMo, Inc., the Japanese telecoms giant, has launched a safety device that gets high-precision location information by using the GPS function. The device is designed to provide family members or authorities with positioning information or to enable location tracking when the user pulls the slide switch in a dangerous or emergency situation. The slide switch also triggers a crime prevention buzzer on the device.
The device is based on the U310 platform developed by Ericsson. The platform enables the modem and GPS functionality within the device, which is small enough to be carried inside a pocket or bag for easy activation in case of emergency.
Robert Puskaric, Head of Ericsson Mobile Platforms, says: "This shows that our platform technology is flexible and small enough to be implemented in devices other than the traditional mobile phone. We are also pleased to see that our platform has been included in a security device within the DoCoMo portfolio, as this proves its stability and quality."
The product, CTG-001G, has been developed by Giant Electronics on behalf of DoCoMo, and was launched on the Japanese market on December 7.
Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.

LG Viewty Notches Phenomenal Performance in First 5 Weeks
Seoul, Korea, December 17, 2007 LG Electronics has announced that its LG Viewty featuring five-megapixel camera phone (model: LG-KU990) has recorded impressive sales performance of over 310,000 units since its introduction to the European market.
With its innovative functions and distinctive design, LG Viewty, the professional-level camera phone earned extensive media and consumer attention even before its launch. The high-tech phone has achieved even wider acclaim since entering markets across Europe including UK, France and Germany notching around 6,300 units daily. This number exceeded the initial records of LGs successful earlier models, LG Chocolate and LG Shine comparing with the same period.
The secret behind the successful sales performance can be credited to the astounding blend of technology and features that LG has packed into this handset. An advanced, full-LCD touch screen complements a rich array of camera features allowing consumers to enjoy high quality image, editing and image-sharing. All of the rich features of LG Viewty surpassing those of any handset currently on the market have been designed to bring maximum benefit to consumers who place a priority on their viewing experience.
Stylish design also factors into the Viewtys popularity, as LG has always placed a premium on design as proven through LG Chocolate and LG Shine. LG Viewty has now achieved a harmony of high technology and sensational style by winning the 2008 iF product design award.
We are thrilled about the immense interest from consumers. In some countries, our product supply is even running low. This impressive result is attributable to the perfect balance between technology and design developed based on consumer insight, said Dr. Skott Ahn, President & CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. LG Viewtys success is a significant achievement for LG as it is the first product in a high-technology line of handset at LG Electronics. With the confidence gained from our brisk sales activity, we will continue to improve areas of both features and premium design.
Sales of LG Viewty are expected to continuously grow throughout the world since it has currently launched into the Asian and Middle East markets and been spotlighted as the best Christmas gift item for packing a sleek handset together with a high-quality digital camera.

Arima Communications targets strong annual handset shipments in 2008 on Sony Ericsson and LGE orders
Despite weak performance in 2007, Arima Communications is expected to grow its handset shipments to 14-16 million units in 2008 buoyed by strong partnerships with Sony Ericsson and LG Electronics (LGE), according to handset component makers.
Arima saw its annual handset shipments decline 27% sequentially to 9.5 million units in 2007 with consolidated revenues for the full year expected to also drop by 22% to NT$19.5 billion (US$60.2 million), noted market sources.
The component makers also revealed that Arima has set its shipments goal for next year. The company will ship 4-5 new handsets to Sony Ericsson with shipments to reach more than 10 million units. Meanwhile, the company will also make three new handsets for LGE with shipments of more than two million units, the makers pointed out.
In addition to one million smartphone orders from i-mate, WMG and E-Ten, the company is also expecting orders from customers in Japan and Thailand in 2008.
Sony Ericsson originally planned to push low-cost (under 100 Euro) handsets in 2007-2008. However, as the sales were below expectations, the company is revising its products orientation and channel strategy, according to the sources. Sony Ericsson will continue to team up with Arima and Chi Mei Communication Systems (CMCS) next year and Unihan Technology, Asustek Computer's spun-off subsidiary, is expected to become the new supplier for Sony Ericsson, the sources indicated, adding that Arima will remain the company's largest handset ODM maker.
LG accounted for 20% of Arima's overall handset shipments in 2007 and the Taiwan maker expects to increase the proportion to 30% to reduce the risk of focusing too much on Sony Ericsson, the sources noted. Arima's shipments proportion to Sony Ericsson will decrease to 60% next year, compared to 70% in the past, the sources said.
